What Foods to Make Sure to Avoid for the First Week After Oral SurgeryOral surgery can make the mouth feel uncomfortable for a while after the procedure is done. Due to this, it is important to know your tolerance when it comes to introducing food back into your diet.

There are specific foods that you should stay away from during this time, since they can do more damage than any benefit it could provide if you choose to eat them.

It is also recommended that patients stick with liquid and soft foods for the first 48 to 72 hours after surgery to be on the safe side. This is better for the mouth and will help it heal while reducing complications.

Foods to Avoid During the First Week of Recovery

Any foods that are sharp or extremely hard, such as chips, cookies, peanuts, cereal and other foods that might become lodged in the extraction site or stab in the surgical area are not recommended and should be refrained from until the mouth is completely healed.

Foods that are acidic should also be avoided. These can be fruits, such as oranges that might have a pretty high acidic level that could burn the surgical area.

Spicy or hot foods should be avoided, as they can not only be painful if in the surgical area, but they can cause inflammation in the area, as well.

Sticky or gummy foods such as fruit snacks and gums are not recommended during this time. This can become lodged in the surgical spot and cause complications.

If drinks are acidic, hot, or have the potential to cause complications, then they should be refrained from, as well, for the best results and faster healing times.
