Things to Know Before Getting Dental Implants

Posted on 3/15/2019 by Woodland Hills OMS
Things to Know Before Getting Dental ImplantsDental implants are one of the best options to replace lost, broken or damaged teeth. Implants offer the best solutions, but they are not for everyone. Many people don't understand what the options they have for replacing missing or broken teeth or to fix other issues with their teeth.

They also don't know what makes implants better than some of the other options. This makes it harder for people to make the right decision. These are some of the things to know that can help with the decision.

Implants vs. Dentures

The most obvious option for people instead of implants is to turn to dentures. Partial can full dentures can replace missing teeth in a similar way to implants. The difference is that the dentures are not permanent. It is necessary to remove the dentures nightly and clean them for them to work for a long period of time. Dentures do not last forever either. Implants are a permanent replacement for teeth that you care for in the same way as natural teeth.

The Cost
Implants are not cheap. A full set of implants can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Even replacing just one tooth can cost hundreds if not a few thousand dollars. The cost of implants is one of the reasons that many do not consider them. When considering the cost don't forget that other options do not last as long and require investment in other products to care for them.

There are Two Parts to Implants
Implants consist of a post and a crown. The post is a metal piece implanted into the jaw bone. The bone grows around the post and is fixed permanently. The crown is the tooth connected to the post. The crown is the visible part of the implant.

How Long Does it Take
The implant is put in place in a same-day surgical procedure. It takes time for the site of the implant to heal and for the bone to attach to the implant. While a person may get the implant and can get the grant, it can take several months for the implant to heal completely and feel secure.

How Long Does It Last
The hope that a person has with an implant is that it will last forever. That depends on how well they care for their teeth. It is possible to damage the crowns and the implant in the same way that people damage their natural teeth. A person is more likely to replace the crowns than to have to do anything to the post of the implant.
