Austin Hale, DDS, MD, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with comprehensive training in the full scope of the specialty. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University, his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and his Doctor of Medicine from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He subsequently completed a six-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Following residency, Dr. Hale continued at Jefferson as a faculty member, caring for patients with complex oral and maxillofacial conditions and teaching residents.
Dr. Hale has a particular interest in dental implant surgery and complex implant reconstruction. This includes patients with significant bone or soft tissue deficiencies resulting from long-standing tooth loss, congenital conditions, prior tumor or cancer treatment, trauma, or previous surgery. His practice includes bone grafting, ridge augmentation, gum grafting, and other reconstructive procedures used to prepare patients for dental implant rehabilitation. Dr. Hale incorporates the latest technology including tissue regeneration, three-dimensional imaging, virtual surgical planning, 3D printing, and computer-guided implant surgery when these tools can improve precision, predictability, or treatment planning.
In addition to implant and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Hale maintains a broad oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. His clinical interests include orthognathic surgery to correct jaw and bite abnormalities, maxillomandibular advancement for obstructive sleep apnea, evaluation and treatment of cysts and tumors of the jaws, and dental and facial reconstruction following pathology and trauma. He also treats temporomandibular joint disorders requiring surgery, with an interest in total joint replacement, as well as facial injuries ranging from dentoalveolar trauma to complex facial fractures.
Dr. Hale believes that excellent surgical care begins with understanding the individual patient, not simply the procedure being performed. He takes time to explain treatment options, imaging, expected recovery, and the reasoning behind his recommendations so that patients can make informed decisions about their care. He is particularly attentive to patients with significant dental or surgical anxiety and strives to create an environment that is calm, respectful, and never rushed. Outside of surgery, Dr. Hale enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and family dog, as well as cooking, traveling, and exploring the outdoors.
