Most humans are very curious about what is going on in their mouths. From poking around crevices with the tip of the tongue to lifting up the lips to see what is going on around the gumline, our oral cavities can be a place of interest to explore.
Some of it might look a bit questionable and lead us to inquire about what is going on. Many common issues in the mouth are not nearly as worrisome as you would think, however, and most of it can be altered simply by changing a few habits.
The tongue can be a fascinating muscle all on its own and for some it can be a pivotal form of expression when it comes to selfies or communicating. Some may wonder what a tongue should look like and if theirs is normal. When you peek into a mirror, what does yours look like? If it has a black coating on it, this could be due to a buildup of keratin and should be easy to remove with a brush and a tongue scraper.
If it has a yellow coating on it, this may be due to an abundance of bacteria. It is generally the result of eating certain foods or being a smoker. Again, a tongue brush can help remove it. Be aware of white spots along the gum line that do not rub away. This could be due to irritation, such as over brushing or exposure to certain foods that may cause an allergic reaction.
Many issues in the mouth that could cause you to worry are actually fairly harmless. If you notice a problem that does not seem to go away after diligent care, it may be time to give us a call. We will be happy to check it out for you to see what is going on.
